Back to Basics


I have been back in Plett a while now, and I am loving being at home. It’s great to have a routine again, and just enjoy normal daily life.

It’s also great to have a break from racing, and now is the time to start building on my fitness for the year to come. Sometimes I think I race too much, and never have time to actually lay the foundations for better performances. Well now I have some time, and I am itching to get into some hard training.

Being my own coach (since the Olympics) is tough, but it also has its advantages. I (hopefully) know myself better than anybody else does, and I know what works for me. Training partners in this area are thin, but I have a few. There are loads of surf ski guys (the clever ones) and Knysna Canoe Club is only 30km away. I am fortunate enough to have a Garmin Forerunner 310XT to help make sure I don’t cheat on any of the sessions! Splash makes a great running partner, although he is a sprinter at heart, and anything over 5km’s is a bit tough for him, nothing that a bit of planning can’t work around!

So the next few months will be all about “back to basics” for me. I need to make sure I will be stronger and faster than last season, and I have some exciting races on the cards!

    Michele: Occasional discriptions (with pro & con evaluations) of your training would be very welcome to us aspiring fitness paddlers.

      Chuck, will make an effort to give some (top secret) detail in future, but you know the saying… “if I tell ya, I’ll have to kill ya” ?? Ha ha, just kidding!
